5 Steps to Prepare Your Home for an HVAC Installation

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) installations can be stressful. You may have to stay home from work, prepare space for the new installation, and watch your kids or pets to ensure they don’t get in the way.

Plus, there are the complications of installing the HVAC system itself. Like drilling holes into your floors, connecting electrical wiring—the whole circus. But installing heating and cooling systems doesn’t have to be nerve-wracking.

Today, we’re sharing what to expect during an HVAC installation so that you can prepare yourself and your home beforehand.

Step #1 – Inspecting and Evaluation Your Home for the HVAC System

Every home is different. As such, an online quote won’t be enough to accurately list all your HVAC installation needs. That’s why it’s crucial to have an in-person home inspection.

A home inspection will help your HVAC installer identify all the work that needs to be done. It also allows them to create a more detailed plan tailored to you. Plus, it will give you an idea of what will happen during an HVAC installation.  Also, some rebates in BC (British Columbia) require a home evaluation before installation to qualify for their program.

Step #2 – Apply for the Necessary Permits

Before the actual installation begins, you need to apply for the necessary permits. In BC, you must apply for the following city permits, depending on your HVAC system:

  • Electrical
  • Plumbing
  • Mechanical
  • Development
  • Gas
  • Building

If you live in an apartment building, you may also need to check with strata bylaws on the types of permits they require. For example, condominiums generally require a work and construction permit.

Step #3 – Prepare Your Home for the HVAC System

HVAC companies in Vancouver operate on a tight schedule. And so do you. As such, you want to prevent any delays as much as possible by preparing your home for an HVAC installation.

Here are some ways you can do that:

  • Keep your valuables in a secure location.
  • Clear a path so installers can move freely around the installation site.
  • Ensure your children are safe during the installation, like at a daycare or in another room.
  • Place pets on a leash or inside a cage to prevent them from getting underfoot.
  • Place dustcovers on your floor, furniture, decorations, appliances, and other items.

Step #4 - Be Present During the Installation

It’s your home—no one else can make a final decision on changes to your home except for you. So, make sure to be available all throughout the HVAC installation process.

This way, no matter what Vancouver HVAC company you hire, they can ask you questions. This is especially important if there are any last-minute adjustments. Doing so also allows you to better prepare for unforeseeable circumstances, like unsuitable ductwork from an old HVAC system.

Step #5 – Follow-Up Inspection

While an HVAC contractor tests the system right after installation, a trusted HVAC technician does a follow-up inspection days after. This is to ensure that your HVAC is working efficiently and that there are no problems with your system.

And if you do encounter problems, they'll be able to resolve it right away, within the system’s warranty.  Most of all, follow-up inspections allow homeowners to raise any additional questions and concerns about their new system.

And there you have it—the 5 steps of an HVAC installation. Keep these tips in mind for the next time you upgrade your HVAC system. And you'll save yourself the headache, time, and anxiety.
